In January 2003 we attended the first Chattanooga city council meeting of the year, we presented the opening prayer, a speech then a gift package about Islam to each council member and the City mayor.

We have delivered the opening prayer and the first speech in that day, here is a copy of the speech for future reference:

In the name of God the most Gracious, the most Merciful

Dear Mr. Mayor, respected Chairman, Councilwoman and councilmen:

I would like to thank you for the opportunity to speak about the Muslims in Chattanooga,

My name is Abdou Kattih, I am a pharmacist and I am one of over 2000 Muslims who live in and around Chattanooga. who share the same hopes and realities with every other American that lives in our great country.

For the past two years Islam has been hijacked by different groups and used to serve their own agenda, which has nothing to do with Islam, nor does it represent the Muslim’s interest.

We feel that it is our obligation to share the beautiful clear view of our faith with our society, and we feel the importance for the leaders of our society to know the various groups that form the society.

Islam is all about High Morals, Peace, Love, Charity, Family and believing in one God. And Muslims are just human beings trying to live up God’s words as they were ordered in their Holy book The Quran. In doing so we find what binds us with other faiths and we hope that the rest of the society will do the same.

We have started a project to distribute educational materials about Islam and Muslims for free through out the society. We started by donating over 1400 books to the libraries in the area, then we started offering free information packages about Islam to all those who are interested, and so far we have sent out over 300 packages. Today we have a small package of books and booklets to each member of the Chattanooga City council that we hope you will accept.

Our efforts will continue as we extend a hand of friendship and unity to all the society and we ask them to come forward and learn about Islam and Muslims, and, in God’s willing, we will be there to help all those who seek such knowledge.

I thank you for allowing me to speak here today and ask God the Almighty to guide our steps to the straight path.

Do this in your town:

1. Look up your city web site and get a list of the councilmen and women in the City Council.

2. Contact your district council and express your project idea to him/her.

3. Upon getting the approval and setting up the date, prepare your speech, making sure it is general, short and direct.

4. Prepare the gift packages based on your budget, make sure to include a cover letter in each package.

5. Dress your best, take one to two people only with you to the meeting, make a prayer and hit to the meeting.
